Aikido is
a martial art that is neatly translated as 'The Way of Harmony
of the Spirit'. By joining the force of the attacker with the
complimentary redirection response of the defender, the practice
of Aikido can be a beautiful thing to behold. Morihei Ueshiba,
the founding father of Aikido, was born in 1883 and died at the
grand age of 85 in 1969. Although Morihei Ueshiba had studied
several forms of matial arts, he was convinced that there was a
pure martial form for the human being. Morihei Ueshiba, while
studying Daito-ryu jujutsu with Sensei Sokaku Takeda, found
himself inspired to develop a perfect form of martial art.
The development of such a martial
art that allows the redirection of attacking energy into a
harmless direction is deeply connected to the Japanese Ancient
Shinto-esque religion called Oomoto [Meaning Origin]. The basic
belief of Oomoto is centred around the spirit of a godhead
manifesting itself in all existence. What might be considered
good and bad in western religions would be considered as aspects
of the same origin. Aikido is considered a peaceful resolution
to an busy situation (it's difficult to describe as I am from
Europe) and the word attack would be technically incorrect as
the 'attacker' is only a force which will be sent on towards its
peaceful future. |
