         Introduction to Archery

Archery is one the modern day sports that has its origins with our communal roots. Initially a method for hunting food and defending ourselves against rival clans, who would be in competition for food and territory. Essentially Archery became a highly effective method of hitting a target with a stone, initially we would have use hand held methods, then developing sling shots and eventually finding that if we attached small sharp shards of stone to a straight shaft of wood we could hit our targets more efficiently and with a deadlier result.

Eventually, as time went by and with the development of firearms, prowess in Archery skills became more a competitive activity than a method of defence. Exponents of Archery (Archers) are highly regarded for their accuracy, control of balance, breath and nerves. They also have to be completely in tune with their equipment and their environment, having to make split-second decisions on wind, distance and tension. Because of these, almost super-human, abilities many civilisations have historically prized their archery champions ... sometimes elevating them to positions of philosophical power.

Modern Competitive Archery is split into Target Archery and Field Archery. Target Archery is held both indoors (up to 25m) and outdoors (up to 90m). The targets are marked out with 10 concentric circles, each given progressively higher scores the closer that you get to the bull ( X ). Field Archery is played outside with a spread of targets at different distances from the Archer. The idea of field archery would seem to be to better simulate the hunting with bow and arrow.
