Introduction to Basketball |
|
|
|
|
Basketball
is one of the world's most popular sports, both for players and
spectators alike. Basketball is an exciting team sport, played
by 5 Basketball Players on each side. The Basketball Court size
can vary from 74 feet in length for a small school court to the
94 feet court that is used in the National Basketball
Association (NBA). The speed of play in basketball can be
immense. The players can walk and run with the basketball in
their posession if they 'dribble' or bounce the ball as
they move. Passing the ball can be done over great distances,
giving rise to great changes in pace and gaining of advantage
over the opposition. Fouls such as 'Double Dribbling',
'Travelling' and 'Carrying' can result in free throws and the
change of play direction ... adding to the level of spectator
excitement.
Scoring in Basketball is achieved when a team successfully
shoots the basketball through the hoop that their opponents are
guarding. The basketball court is marked with a line that
demarks the 2-point shooting zone from the 3-point shooting
zone. As Basketball is a non-contact sport there is also the
opportunity for each team to score from penalty shots, awarded
for infringements in the playing rules.
Basketball was first devised as a means of providing an indoor
team sport, which would allow the members of the YMCA in
Massachusetts (USA) to keep up their fitness levels during the
harsh winters. Dr. James Naismith was the P.E. Instructor for
the YMCA and having discounted many other options, devised the
rules to Basketball to restrain the level of physical contact
and allow for a court with walls. As the sport began to build it
became obvious that rules would have to developed so to curtail
the rough playing of the game. The National Basketball League
was a short lived professional league, which only lasted for
five years from 1898. The league had 7 first division teams, but
suffered a lack of intensity in January 1904 and the league was
disbanded.
Basketball became synonomous with the American spirit when it
was taken up by American Colleges. Statistics became a big part
of the sport and with the dawn of a basketball players hall of
fame the sport was assured the following of fascinated public
following. |
