Introduction to Bodybuilding |
|
|
|
|
Prior to the
first Bodybuilding event in the 1880's, men's physical
strength was paraded at travelling fairs and curiosity shows in
the form of wrestling and boxing matches. The development of a
sport that equally credits for strength and muscular proportions
was a creation of Eugen Sandow, the founder of the
Institute of Physical Culture in the last years of the 19th
Century. He stage the first bodybuilding tournament in London in
1901 and the judges included such famous individuals as Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle. The event was a raging success that
attracted a full audience.
Competitive Prize Bodybuidling soon took America by storm
and prize money made the sport as attractive for spectators,
bodybuilders and managers alike.
Bodybuilding became the sport of choice for any man who had
witnessed the call to exercise by Charles Atlas. Charles Atlas
had developed an exercise program which, it was alleged, could
transform a 10 stone weakling into a man of stronger and larger
proportions.
The film "Pumping Iron", starring bodybuilding greats
such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno and Franco
Columbu, became extremely popular and broke box office
records. It followed the contestants of the bodybuilding
competition "Mr Universe" and gave the perspective of
different tournament hopefuls as they prepared for the big
event. Although the bodybuilding world had known of Arnold
Schwarzenegger for many years, he was now presented to a muscle
worshipping worldwide audience ... propelling him into probably
the most recognisable hollywood star and, nowadays, the second
most recognisable politician.
The modern competition of Bodybuilding has been transformed into
a highly controlled event. The IFBB or International Federation
of BodyBuilding & Fitness introduced drug testing in order to
eliminate the use of anabolic-androgen steroids and other
performance enhancing drugs. Anabolic-androgen steroids
are drugs which act in the body as testosterone (the male
sex hormone). Steroids can damage the live and heart, heighten
blood pressure and create imbalances within the blood. It is
felt that a competitive sport should be a clean representation
of one sports-person's abilities against another and that the
use of steroids changes the natural characteristics of a
competition. Therefore strict controls are now in place and
severe penalties for anyone that is found to be cheating.
The term Professional Bodybuilder refers to a bodybuilder
that has been awarded the 'Pro Card' by the IFBB. This card
entitles a bodybuilding professional to compete in major
championships and eventually earn the right to compete for the
highest bodybuilding title - Mr Olympia (most recent
winners include: Dorian Yates (UK), Ronnie Coleman
(USA), Jay Cutler (USA) and Dexter Jackson (USA). |
