         Introduction to Cycling

Originally introduced in the 19th century, cycling now covers a variety of machines, exercises and events. Encompassing unicycles, two-wheeled, tricycles and quadracycles, for indoor, road and off-road sport. From the child trike or beginners cycle with stabilisers, to bmx's for stunts, mountain bikes for off-road adventure, and the specialised racing bicycles, there is a choice for everyone.

The 'Golden Age of Cycling' was in the 1890's when races started to become very popular in Europe, USA and Japan. The 1896 Summer Olympics offered six categories of competition within a Velodrome, four of the golds being won by France. It is no wonder therefore that the Tour de France, probably the most famous of races, started just a few years later in 1903.

The velodrome is an indoor track, the surface originally being of a wood construction. It includes two straights and two 180 degree circular bends, at which point the cyclist can reach speeds of around 50mph. The bikes are specifically designed with no brakes, but with a single fixed rear gear which does not allow a free-wheel motion. The track is marked 20cm up from the bottom and the lap can be anywehere between 250 and 400metres. The smaller the track, the steeper the banking.

During the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, The Great British team excelled, winning 8 gold medals out of 18 categories. The sport is growing in popularity, and starting to encompass many more areas of expertise.

On a more down to earth note.... the cycle is now a modest form of transport. It offers a healthy burst of exercise, is a clean mode of transport, with no air or noise pollution. Road safety issues should be taken note of, sensible safety equipment worn for personal protection, and the correct lighting and safety features builot into the bike frame. Many cycle paths and routes are now provided nationwide, and it can be a very worthwhile, inexpensive and fun family day out.
