Introduction to Football or Soccer |
|
|
|
|
Football or
Soccer is by far the most followed sport in the UK today.
The Premier League is the top football league in the UK and is
the envy of the world, for its quality and variety of playing
talents. The following of a football team is almost obligatory
in today's society, children continuing to follow teams that
have been supported by the fathers and grandfathers. This has,
at its best, lifted the nations spirits and at its worst,
resulted at times in tribal running battles between competing
team supporters.
Although football has been played for hundreds of years, the
league game as we know it today was forming its identity in the
mid 19th century. The FA - Football Association was
formed to create an internationally agreed set of rules to the
game and is considered to be the oldest national football
association.
The game itself is played by eleven players on each side. Each
side has a goalkeeper, who is the only player that is allowed to
handle the ball within his designated area. The game is played
with a round inflated ball of 27-28 inches in size, it should
weigh 14-16 ounces. The pitch can vary depending upon the
particular league or tournament that you are playing in. For an
international game the pitch would be approximately 110 yards in
length and 70 yards in width. Football pitches are marked with
several lines including: A perimeter with a corner markings, a
halfway line with a centre circle and centre spot, each goal
with have a penalty area with penalty arc and penalty spot,
there is also a smaller (goal area) rectangle marked out from
the goal.
Football is a fast paced ball game and game play is controlled
by a referee with the assistance from two line judges. The
referee has sole control in the case of an infringement in the
rules (i.e. no referral to external TV aids etc). |
