Golf, as
well as being a professional sport, is also a tremendously
popular sporting pastime for both men and women. As with many
sports there are many varied opinions on the origins of Golf,
but the game as we know it today seems to date back to Scotland
in the 15th Century. The rules of Golf are based on fair play
and a respect for your opponent. Because of this there is a
great deal of Golfing Etiquette that helps to ensure that
the course is always ready for the next player on the course.
Golf Clubs have become highly engineered pieces of
golfing equipment. A Golfer is allowed a maximum of 14 clubs
with which to complete his round. Woods for driving distance,
Irons for differing levels of lofty shots and putters for the
pin-point accuracy required to put the ball on the green.
There are 18 holes on a golf course, each given a 'Par'
rating, which is a number of shots that would be expected to be
played to complete each hole. A Golfer is awarded points
depending on the number of shots [Over or Under Par) that they
take to complete the hole. One interesting characteristic of
Golf is the names awarded for the shots taken to play a hole.
For instance if a players plays a hole in one shot under the par
value it is said to be a "Birdie", if they are lucky enough to
be 3 shots under par, they have shot an "Albatross". Equally,
when shots fail to make the par value they have names with
somewhat of a more negative connotation (e.g. A Quadruple Bogey
for 4 over par).
Golf is played in various formats. 'Match Play' pits the
skills of the players against each other and awards a point to
the player that gets the best score per hole, with a half point
for draws. If, after 18 holes are completed and there is no
clear winner, the game will continue hole by hole until one
player is victorious. Another format is called 'Stroke Play',
in which each player keeps a total of the number of shots that
have been taken to complete the course and these scores are
compared with the other players at the end of the match, the
lowest score being the winner. |
